What is Popular Culture?

Popular culture, which is also known as pop culture, is made of ideas, perspectives, attitudes and images that are widely accepted and preferred by mainstream of a given culture based on art, films, clothing, music and sports to name a few.  This knowledge is passed through newspapers, magazines, radio and TV but exploded through the Internet.

Depending on your line of work, popular culture might affect your work environment or the direction of your business.  An good example in the fashion industry is the baggy, parachute-style pants made famous by Mc Hammer back in the 1980’s.  They started to make a comeback in 2009 under the name “Harem Pants”.  These were essentially the same style worn by the rapper in his glory days but with more glamorous fabrics and matching blazers.

Movie theme songs or music are my favorite pop culture artifacts.  Artifacts could create a lasting impression in society.  The theme music for Star Wars, Jaws and Pirates of the Caribbean are great examples of these artifacts.  You know exactly which movie is from when you hear it and sometimes makes you want to watch the movie again.
